Projects Report

This post is really more a quick progress report on the various Tab projects rather than in in-depth musing on game development. So here we go:...

A Look at Armor

In this I want to talk about armor. In an RPG the concept of armor is simple: wear a piece of equipment or have an ability, and make getting damaged more difficult. There are three major ways that RPGs often handle this:...

Combat Turn Design Decisions

Before I get into the meat of this post, I first wanted to point out that the Ganjifa Kickstarter was an amazing success, and that the Beta 3 of Against the Dark Yogi is now publicly available for download. That's important stuff, but that's already been covered on the TabBlog and will likely be covered again in a couple weeks as part of next quarter's Tab Update....

Keywords

Against the Dark Yogi Beta 2 is nearing its end, and I figured I'd take the time to talk about a subject of game design on which I've given a good deal of thought: the use of keywords....

Ganjifa Cards & Against the Dark Yogi Beta 2

A while back, while researching for Against the Dark Yogi we briefly considered using Ganjifa cards in the game. Ganjifa cards are traditional round Indian playing cards, and they're pretty cool. The problem, we discovered, is that there hasn't been a general market printing of ganjifa cards in the US since the 1950's, and so they're very difficult to find. (Or at least difficult to find without shelling out a lot of money.)...

Luck Points & the Core

I've been giving some thought recent to luck points as they existed in first generation Saga Machine games, how they influence the feel of the game and whether they're a good thing to include in a genre-agnostic game's core....

Setting Sheet: Ishtaban

I'm now happy to present the third in our series of Setting Sheets: Ishtaban. Like our first two (Tansaar & Bhurloka), this Setting Sheet a page--both front and back--detailing a particular setting in brief. We plan to release more of setting sheets, all leading up to the release of our final product for the first generation of Saga Machine games: Nexus Endtime....

Second Quarter 2013 Tab Update

Like the last few, it's been a busy quarter at Tab Creations....

The Open Beta Begins

A few days ago the open beta of Against the Dark Yogi officially started. This iteration of the beta is expected to last a couple months, then a second iteration will begin. You can check it out at the link above....

From the Alpha to the Beta

The private alpha test of Against the Dark Yogi will be coming to an end in the next week or two. This marks a turning point in the development of the game, as the first public beta is expected to launch shortly thereafter. Once the public beta has launched, the game (or at least certain parts of it) will become available for download on the Tab Creations website and for critique on the public beta forums. Anyone who has also contacted us in an interest in the game will receive an email about the release of the public beta as well....
